Student Responsibilities

The following information is designed to complement University academic integrity policies; in no way does it supersede or replace that information.

Per Senate policy 49-20, “Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity in an open, honest and responsible manner” which includes “a commitment by all members of the University community not to engage in or tolerate acts of falsification, misrepresentation or deception” (Senate policy 49-20). 

With this in mind, students are responsible for:

  • Transparency and authenticity
  • Avoiding deception and misrepresentation of any kind in their academic work
  • Creating and submitting academic work in accordance with course/assessment policies and instructions, which often address proper/improper
    • Collaboration
    • Use of materials, information, tools, technologies (including AI tools and AI technologies provided by Penn State), and study aids.
    • Attribution of unoriginal content in academic 
    • Authenticity of academic content, including data, sources, interviews, and quotations
    • Use of academic work, which was submitted for credit previously, in part or entirely
  • Following testing instructions and procedures
  • Ensuring that they are not violating academic integrity expectations before they assist someone with their academic work
  • Familiarizing themselves with and meeting the academic integrity standards of their academic program(s), including professional certificate programs, major/minor programs, honors programs, and graduate programs
  • Providing honest responses to inquiries around academic integrity concerns
  • Completing assigned educational interventions and doing so honestly
